A beautiful rich, red papery bloom, that inspired the WW1 poem ‘In Flanders Fields’ by Lt. Col. John McCrae. Used ever since as the flower of remembrance for war dead, and as the emblem of ANZAC Day. An exquisite massed display, flowering over a long period.

Features

  • Iconic bloom
  • Plant in drifts
  • Hardy annual

How

Sow direct where they are to grow as these plants do not transplant well. Scatter seed thinly over soil and barely cover with Yates Black Magic Seed Raising Mix. Firm down and water with a fine mist spray. Thin crowded seedlings after germination.

Care

Choose a well drained position in full Sun but sheltered from the wind. Add compost and Yates Thrive Natural Blood & Bone before planting, and fertilise regularly with Yates Thrive Soluble Flower & Fruit Plant Food. Protect from snails and slugs.

Hint

Pinch out early buds until the plants have formed good clumps. Remove spent flowers to promote further blooming. Water at base of plant to avoid disease.

Store in a cool dry place away from direct Sunlight. Keep out of reach of children and pets.
